Oakland, California,
Ascension Historical Committee,
Lecture

William Wong will address the Ascension Historical Committee and guests at the Ascension Greek Orthodox Cathedral complex in Oakland, California, 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 2, 2004.

A pioneer among Asian American journalists, Oakland-native William Wong has spent more than 30 years working as a reporter and inside observer of Asian America's dynamic role in a changing America. Wong's front page news features about the growing Asian American community for The Wall Street Journal in the 1970s are just some of the many prestigious bylines he's had over the years in publications like The Oakland Tribune, The San Francisco Chronicle, The San Francisco Examiner, Asian Week, and salon.com.

In 2001, Wong gathered some of his columns and other writings in the book, Yellow Journalist: Dispatches from Asian America (Temple University Press, 2001).

Wong's new book, Images of America: Oakland's Chinatown, a photo history, will be released by Arcadia Publishing Co. In a connected project, Wong won a California Council for the Humanities California Stories grant to conduct oral interviews of Oakland Chinese Americans who grew up in the pre-World War II era.
