Preservation of American Hellenic History

Appeal for Veterans Records
2nd Veterans Commemoration Day
Oakland, California

The second Veterans Commemoration will be observed on Sunday November 24, 2002, during the Divine Liturgy at the Cathedral of the Ascension, including a mnymosynon (memorial service) to honor those who made the supreme sacrifice, and an artoclasion for the living. The service will be followed by a light lunch hosted by the Ascension Historical Committee, and an exhibit of all veterans whose photographs and records have been submitted to the Committee.

The Ascension Historical Committee is documenting the names and dates of veterans, and preserving their records, from the Civil War, Spanish American War, Balkan Wars, World War 1, World War 2, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, etc, through to current times. Currently, we are particularly seeking records of those who served in the Gulf War, especially records of women, and of those who made the supreme sacrifice.

The Committee requests the submission of records of all men and women of Hellenic affiliation who served in the Armed Forces of the United States; Greece, and Allies. We also encourage the submission of personal recollections of veterans and their families.

These materials will become an integral segment of our permanent historical archives for the benefit of our children, grandchildren, and future generations.

Recognizing that the experience and background of each veteran are important historical resources which need to be preserved, we urge you to submit a photograph of the person in uniform and a copy of the separation papers. Please send the separation papers and photographs of all family members, both living deceased, who are or were veterans of the Armed Forces.
