Ascension Historical Society
Annual Hellenic Run
We celebrated Greek Independence Day with our Greek Independence Day Run around the shores of Oakland's scenic Lake Merritt on or near March 25th each year since 1994.
Beginning in 2015, we've moved the run to a later month, and it has come to be called the Hellenic Run.
We organize numerous competitions for various levels and interests; and we organize competitions that include families as well as individuals.
The registration fee entitles each competitor to an assigned number, a commemorative T-shirt, and a certificate of participation. Laurel wreaths and medals are awarded to the winners of each competition.
Afterwards, spanakopita, feta cheese, olives, kouloura, desserts, beverages, and fresh oranges are enjoyed in the spring sunshine in the Lakeside Park by everyone present at the event, observers as well as the competitors.
This annual event has become a fund raiser for the Ascension Historical Society (AHS).
It continues to improve and expand due to the generosity of the event's organizers, sponsors, donors, and participants.
